FRIDAY JULY 13, SATURDAY JULY 14, & SUNDAY JULY 15
- St. Albert Botanical Gardens: irises, lilies, peonies, and roses. The lilies thriving at the gardens were donated by ARLS and Parkland Perennials
- Muttart Conservatory: mainly annual beds surrounding this dramatic facility.
- Chinese Garden and Louise Mckinney Rose Garden.
MONDAY, JULY 16
Come out and see lilies in the country!
- Jodi Horne -- Leduc County. Only minutes from the Edmonton International Airport, Jodi's gardens are open to those who wish to make one last stop before hopping on their plane. Over 200 varieties of lilies adorn mixed perennial gardens throughout the yard.
- Valley K Greenhouses AKA www.plantlilies.com -- Camrose County. Feast your senses while strolling these relaxed country gardens, featuring over 900 varieties of hardy lilies plus perennial, rose and water gardens. As lily 'show time' here typically peaks at the end of July, stop by their booth during the show for more info, and to confirm the lilies are blooming.
- Terry and Shauna Willoughby -- Parkland County. Terry and Shauna warmly welcome you to their acreage home amongst the hosta, iris, lilies and peony--just fifteen minutes drive from west Edmonton. Martagon lovers will enjoy their gardens. So will those that like exotic bantam poultry and pheasants!

to
Dr. Eugene Fox 1937 - 2007
Gene was an unmistakable individual who stood out in any crowd. He had an irascible sense of humour and a unique style of writing and talking. He spent his youth in the Red Deer area of central Alberta. When he retired in the early 1990s he gave his full attention to his lily ranch 20 miles south of Edmonton. As an instructor and mentor, he could enthrall lily enthusiasts with his knowledge of lilies, including their history, plant genetics and judging procedures. He was a founding member of the Alberta Regional Lily Society (ARLS) and immediate past president of NALS. Gene was very active in NALS: he edited The Lily Yearbook for many years, was co-editor of the 2006 revision of Showing Lilies, and wrote many articles on lilies in the QB and elsewhere. He self-published his definitive book, Martagon Lilies, in 2006. Gene will be sorely missed by members of the regional and international lily societies.
Marvin Joslin 1931 - 2006
Marvin grew up near Red Deer Alberta. He was a life-long gardener who ‘discovered’ lilies in 1983, when he retired and moved to his acreage west of Edmonton and a friend gave him bulbs of 50 older cultivars. His interest in lilies was further inspired by Dan Dale, whom he met at a local lily show in 1984. By 1985, he had 150 cultivars and won Best in Show for a stem of ‘Snowbird’ at the ARLS show. Marvin was a founding member of the Alberta Regional Lily Society (ARLS). Marvin counted Terry Willoughby and Ieuan Evans among his converts to growing lilies, particularly martagons. During his retirement, Marvin organized and ran Parkland Perennials and Estate Perennials, which sold lilies, daylilies, peonies and other perennials. Marvin’s clear-yellow martagon, ‘Lois Hole’, has been very popular. Marvin’s horticultural business has been taken over by Kevin Frey. Marvin was outstanding in his generosity, cooking capabilities and hospitality. Marvin was a major contributor to ARLS annual shows and his loss will be keenly felt by ARLS members.
Russell Bennett 1940 - 2005
Russell also grew up near Red Deer, Alberta. He and Gene Fox attended the same high school. Russell was a keen gardener but particularly fond of lilies. As Russell’s mother was an enthusiastic gardener, his interest in gardening was stimulated from an early age. He and his wife, Jean, lived on a lovely acreage that was featured on the cover of the September, ’04 Quarterly Bulletin. His interest in martagons was sparked by a talk at Olds College by Gene Fox. His enthusiasm was further stimulated when he won the Claude Shride Award in 1998. Russell hybridized both asiatic and martagon lilies but his first love was martagons. His hybridizing efforts were just reaching fruition when he died. His asiatic hybrids have been taken on by Lynnette Westfall at Valley K Greenhouses while his brothers, Dwayne and Brianwho are also avid gardenersare growing his martagon hybrids. Russell was active on the ARLS board and an avid volunteer in all of ARLS activities even though he lived a two-hour drive from Edmonton.
