Bulb Sources
(Updated June 2006)

Martagon lilies take about 7 years from seed to flower. Consequently, bulbs are neither readily available nor inexpensive (compared to some other lily bulbs). We’ve found the sources below to be reliable and able to provide healthy bulbs. In the rare instance of a mistake, the matter was taken care of quickly and professionally.

To buy from a source outside one’s own country costs more because of additional expense such as: (1) increased shipping costs, (2) plant-health inspection papers to get the bulbs into your country, and (3) the possible costs for supplying the sellers with a bank-draft in his/her currency. When you order from another country, you may want get together with some other martagon lily lovers and submit a combination order, thus spreading the expense over several individuals.

Your Local (Regional) Lily Society

Most Lily Societies conduct bulb sales in the fall; some do additional sales in springtime.

Most gardeners will have extra bulbs sooner or later. Many of our bulbs came from friends we’ve gotten to know through membership in our local lily society, as well as through NALS. Trading bulbs is a wonderful way to increase your collection of martagons!

The ELG (European Lily Group) sells lily bulbs each fall, but apparently only within Europe itself. Web site: www.liliengesellschaft.org

Martagon Seed Sources
(Updated June 2006)

It takes much longer to raise martagons from seed to flower than most other lilies. But there are a number of reasons to do so: (1) the number of different martagon species and hybrids are small compared to most other lily groups, and bulbs can sometimes be difficult to locate (tissue-culture may ease that problem in the near future) and (2) some countries are so restrictive on bulb imports, seed seems a more practical alternative (New Zealand comes to mind). So clear your schedule, dab a little pollen and plant some seeds!

Seed Exchanges or Pools give some kind of preferential treatment to those who donate seeds. Some offer free seeds, others provide a week or so head-start on those who do not donate seed. We strongly favor donating high quality seeds to one or more of the entities listed above. Without individuals donating seed, these sources would soon cease to exist. Conversely, the more people donate, the better the selection! What convinced us to be regular seed donors? Imagine: seeds that came from our back-yards turning into beautiful lilies in gardens all over the world! Cool! Really cool!
